Oils stains can happen anywhere. Even if your vehicles do not leak, you cannot ensure delivery trucks or visitors do not as well. Oil that sits on your driveway can cause damages. It can eat through sealants too. Below are seven do-it-yourself (DIY) ways to remove oil stains from your asphalt. (Some stains may require more than one treatment. If your stain has been there for a while, you may need to repeat one of the below a few times to fully remove it.)
- Baking Soda
Sprinkle a large amount of baking soda over your oil stain. Scrub it into the stain with a stiff bristle brush. Allow the baking soda to sit on the oil stain for a minimum of thirty minutes to further absorb any reside. Rinse off with a hose.
- Dish Soap
Squirt liquid dish soap over the oil stain. Add a bit of water. Using a stiff bristled brush, scrub the stain with the soapy solution. Rinse off with a hose.
- Kitty Litter
Clay-based kitty litter is sold in most areas. Cover the oil stain with a layer of the clay kitty litter. Stomp on the litter to break it up and crush it into any nooks and crannies oil may have become trapped in. Allow it to sit overnight. The next day, sweep up any remaining kitty litter. Rinse the area with your hose.
- Laundry Detergent
You will need to use the powdered laundry detergent for this. Sprinkle the powdered detergent over the oil stain. Add a bit of water and scrub the area with a stiff bristle brush. Allow the mixture to sit on the stain for thirty minutes before hosing off.
- Oven Cleaner
If oven cleaner can remove oil and grease from your oven, it can work for your driveway too. Spray the stain with your oven cleaner. Allow it to sit for five to fifteen minutes. Scrub the area with a stiff bristle brush. Rinse the area with your highest hose setting.
Coca-Cola is a great home cleaner. After all, it can remove corrosion on batteries. Pour a can or two of the beverage over the oil stain. Allow the soda to sit on the stain overnight. Using a hose, spray off the area the next day.
Saturate the oil stain with WD-40 spray. Rinse off with a hose.
